Having a sense of urgency has long been a super-power of highly-productive and successful people. Have you been around CEOs, business founders and leaders? If yes, you must have noticed how intense and fast-paced they are. They usually talk fast, move fast, and act fast. But why? Why are these people always in a hurry? What are they rushing towards?
There are several very good reason why highly successful people can’t seem to sit still and are always looking for something to do.
Successful people realize they have limited time on Earth
Reason number 1 is that these go-getters like business founders and CEOs have realized their time here on Earth is limited. They know they aren’t going to live forever, and so they are in a constant hurry to reach their goals, to live life fully, and to have such a great impact on the world that their name is remembered long after they’re gone.
Nothing motivates one to move and act like the awareness of a limited time frame! From time immemorial, mankind has been obsessed with not living in vain, each of us dreaming of leaving something a little bit special for the generations to follow. This is one of the biggest motivators for humanity’s most enterprising individuals to do what they do, and it’s absolutely reflected in the intensity of their demeanor.
The need for pressure, intensity and speed to escape the gravity of the ordinary
In order to lift a plane off the ground, you need an insane amount of concentrated force. Once you’ve reached a certain altitude – sure, you can lift your foot off the gas a bit, as long as you still give it enough power to keep the momentum. But a lift-off is a very different beast that requires every bit of horsepower available to make it happen.
It’s the same with kick-starting a business, or managing a start-up – you need maximum pressure and fast-paced execution in order to keep things running. That is why CEOs are often so uptight and hyper-active. What’s more, they realize they need an insane force in order to escape the gravity of the ordinary.
What this means is that when most of your environment is average and mediocre, it’s very difficult to create something extraordinary and high-performance. Why? Because all that ordinary matter around you has a gravitational pull that seeks to “normalize” and dull down whatever seems to stick out. And to escape gravity, what do you need? That’s right – strong, sustained pressure and high speed of action!
CEOs realize there’s just a ton of work to be done!
If you’ve been exposed to high-ranking company officials, you’ll know that in reality, their schedules are often packed to the brim with tasks, appointments, projects, and so on. And when you realize just how much there’s to be done, you understand that the only way to survive and not get terribly stressed out is if you start moving and executing extremely fast, even on days you feel tired or exhausted.
Think about it, with an almost never-ending stream of things to do, the only way if you ever want to reach home and enjoy some family time is to work with the speed of light, so you can move enough things along and not get swamped. Just a few days of procrastination can lead to so much tasks accumulating in the backlog, that you’ll get all stressed out at the mere thought of it!
